Our philosophy
Illawarra Women’s Health Centre has a feminist philosophy—which means that we acknowledge that women are not equal citizens in this world, and that women’s rights, which are human rights, are often not respected—leading to discrimination and violence.
We have a holistic and social view of health and we are committed to actively working towards social change and improving the well-being of women.
We recognize women’s rights, as health consumers, to be treated with respect and dignity in an environment which provides for privacy, informed consent, confidentiality and safety.
Our priority groups include those women who are disadvantaged by virtue of circumstance, socio-economic status, discrimination, etc. This includes Culturally And Linguistically Different (CALD) women, Indigenous women, young women, the lesbian community, low-income women, women with disabilities, and others with emerging needs.
Most services and activities are provided free or at low cost in recognition of the circumstances of the target groups.
