Digging through the archives: 40 years of the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre

As the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre celebrates its 40th year, we dug into the archives to uncover an extraordinary collection of photographs of the Centre over the years.

The images capture the spirit of the women who helped build the Centre from the ground up and turned it into the fierce organisation it is today.

From construction shots in 1984 and the official opening in 1986, to volunteer gatherings, advocacy events and community programs throughout the 1990s, the photographs tell the story of women imagining and physically building change in the Illawarra.

For 40 years, the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre has stood alongside women in the region, advocating for their rights, supporting their well-being and creating a place where women’s voices are heard.

Founded by a collective of determined women in the mid-1980s, the Centre has grown from a grassroots vision into one of the Illawarra’s most trusted community organisations.

From the beginning, the Centre was about more than healthcare. It became a place of advocacy, connection and empowerment. Across four decades, the organisation has supported women through some of the most significant social issues facing the community, including domestic, family and sexual violence, reproductive rights, gender inequality and access to health services.

The images preserved throughout the Centre’s history reveal the deeply human side of that work. Volunteers gathered together in lounge rooms and meeting spaces. Staff worked side by side to grow programs and outreach services.

Community members planted trees on the Centre grounds in 1991 – symbolic of an organisation continuing to grow strong roots in the Illawarra community.

By the late 1980s, the Centre was already expanding its services, including the construction of an occasional childcare centre in 1988 to help remove barriers for women seeking support.

Other photographs show advocacy bike rides, community education events, and multicultural outreach activities, reflecting the Centre’s long-standing commitment to ensuring that all women feel welcome and represented.

Throughout every decade, one thing has remained constant: the power of women coming together to support one another and create change.

As the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre celebrates 40 years, the anniversary is not only a chance to reflect on the organisation’s remarkable history, but to look ahead. The challenges facing women have evolved, but the need for strong, community-led support and advocacy remains as important as ever.

The Illawarra Women’s Health Centre will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary with a Gala Dinner on Friday, July 17, at the Grand Ballroom, Novotel North Wollongong.
