Birth Trauma Awareness Week sparks renewed call for birthing facilities at Shellharbour Hospital

This Birth Trauma Awareness Week, the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre stands in solidarity with every mother who has experienced physical or emotional trauma during pregnancy, birth, or postpartum.

The recent NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Birth Trauma showed us that birth trauma doesn’t always stem from medical emergencies. It can arise from feeling powerless, unheard, or unsupported. Every story is valid, and no one should have to face it alone.

During the inquiry, more than 4,000 people came forward with their experiences, highlighting the need for urgent reform in maternity care.

In response, the NSW Government committed $83 million to improve maternity services, including better access to midwifery models and trauma-informed care. It’s a vital step forward, but regional communities like the Illawarra must not be left behind.

That’s why the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre is calling for dedicated birthing facilities at Shellharbour Hospital.

Despite being one of the fastest-growing areas in NSW, there are still no plans for the new Shellharbour Hospital to provide maternity services

Local women are forced to travel long distances, often while in labour, placing unnecessary stress and risk on families.

“A birthing unit at Shellharbour is essential,” said Sally Stevenson, Executive Director of the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre.

“Women in this region deserve access to safe, trauma-informed maternity care close to home. It’s about equity, it’s about dignity, and it’s about preventing trauma before it begins.”

The birth trauma inquiry made clear that respectful, trauma-informed, continuous care delivered in community settings is key to better outcomes. A birthing unit at Shellharbour would bring us closer to that vision.

“This week, we honour the stories of those who have experienced birth trauma and the advocates fighting for change. Let us keep raising awareness, and raising our voices, until every parent in the Illawarra has access to the care they deserve,” Ms Stevenson said.

This year’s theme for Birth Trauma Awareness Week is “This is Birth”. Birth Trauma Australia is inviting people in Australia to reflect on their birth experiences and share three words that describe their birth journey.
