Standing up for women for 40 years: Illawarra Women’s Health Centre invites community to Anniversary Gala

For four decades, the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre has been a powerful voice for women in the Illawarra – advocating for women’s rights, amplifying women’s experiences, and providing vital health, well-being and safety services.

Since opening its doors in 1986, the Centre has played a key role in raising awareness of issues affecting women, including access to abortion, domestic and family violence, and gender inequality.

Alongside delivering frontline support services, the organisation has worked to ensure women in the Illawarra are heard in public conversations and policy decisions that shape their lives.

To celebrate the milestone, the Centre will host a Gala Dinner on Saturday, May 9, at the Grand Ballroom at Novotel North Wollongong.

The evening will bring together community members, partners, supporters and past leaders to celebrate four decades of impact while raising funds to support the Centre’s ongoing work supporting women across the region.

The Centre’s General Manager, Jess Davidson, said the anniversary reflects a long history of community-led advocacy and support.

“For 40 years, the Centre has been a place where women can seek support, share their experiences, and know their voices matter,” Davidson said.

“We have stood alongside women through some of the most significant social issues affecting our community, from reproductive rights to domestic and family violence.”

“While we are proud of the progress made, the work is far from over. This anniversary is also a chance to look ahead and ensure women in the Illawarra continue to have strong services and a strong voice.”

Since its founding in 1986 by a collective of women, the Centre has grown into a trusted community organisation delivering a range of specialist programs supporting women’s health, safety and wellbeing.

Over the years, the Centre has been guided by dedicated leadership and strong community advocacy to ensure that women in the Illawarra have access to the support and representation they deserve.

All proceeds from the event will go directly toward supporting the Centre’s frontline services and community programs.

Tickets are $160 per person or $1450 for a table of ten. Book here: https://events.humanitix.com/illawarra-women-s-health-centre-40-years-celebration-dinner
