The Illawarra Women’s Health Centre is making waves, literally, with the launch of a new swimming program designed specifically for women who have never learned to swim or are nervous in the water.
Thanks to generous support from Shellharbour City Council’s Community Donations and Sponsorship Grants Program, the Centre will offer swimming lessons to 20 women at Oak Flats Swimming Pool over the next year.
The program offers a structured nine-week course in a supportive and welcoming environment, including swimming goggles and a swim hat.
The funding from Shellharbour City Council means the lessons are fully subsidised.
This initiative grew out of a small pilot program last year, in which five women participated.
The impact was powerful, and by the end of the course, one participant was able to swim 50 metres unaided – a milestone she never thought possible.
“The pilot showed us just how transformative this opportunity can be,” said Illawarra Women’s Health Centre co-ordinator Bonnie Comber. “We’re thrilled to be now able to expand the program, and we’re grateful to Shellharbour City Council for recognising the value of what we’re trying to achieve.”
With the new funding, the Centre will run multiple nine-week programs throughout the year, reaching 20 women. Each class is led by professional instructors specialising in teaching adults and focusing on creating a calm, judgement-free environment.
The lessons continue throughout the winter months in the heated pool. Contact the Illawarra Women’s Health Centre on 4243 9800 for more information about how to get involved.
Places are limited, so early registration is encouraged.
