Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities:

Did you know?

Women with a disability are almost twice as likely as women without disability to have experienced physical or sexual violence by a cohabiting partner over a 12-month period (ABS 2021 - as reported by People with Disability Australia and DVNSW)

Violence against women is a men's issue
Significant and consistent findings in scholarship, is that most violence is perpetrated by men... What we are certain of, because of the weight of that evidence, [is that] regardless of your gender, you are most likely to experience violence at the hands of men. (ANROWS The State of Knowledge report on Violence Perpetration 2023)

There are ways we can all help stop violence against women - some starter ideas from UN Women

Listen to and believe survivors
Teach the next generation and learn from them
Call for responses and services fit for purpose
Understand consent
Learn the signs of abuse and how you can help
Start a conversation

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a vital time to shed light on the diverse experiences of individuals impacted by violence, including those within the LGBTQ+ community. Research shows that lesbian, transgender, and queer women face similar risks of domestic and family violence as non-LGBTQ+ women.

During this campaign, we’re highlighting Say It Out Loud, an Australian initiative dedicated to promoting healthy relationships and supporting LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing or concerned about violence.

From educational resources to safety tools and a directory of support services, their website offers a wealth of information for both individuals and allies.

Visit https://sayitoutloud.org.au to explore these resources and learn how you can make a difference. Together, we can work toward ending violence in all its forms.
